Polish Family’s Platypus Find – Flora, Fauna & Falls Tour

Warsaw family, Kasia, husband Chris, and children Julian and Amelia, spent a couple of enjoyable days with Tasmania I Drive which included the Flora, Fauna & Falls Day Tour and a modified Freycinet National Park Day Tour.

Our first day together saw us heading to Mount Field National Park with a brief stop at the Westerway Raspberry Farm for coffee and some fresh berries to snack on. We took in the fabulous Russell Falls with a good sighting of a couple of pademelons along the path to the falls. After climbing the stairs to the top of the falls we proceeded to complete the tall trees circuit with the giant swamp gums the main attraction.

On the path back toward the visitor centre we came across the absolute highlight for the day, a close-up viewing of a platypus feeding in the Tyenna River, under a footbridge, right in front of us!

Following lunch at the onsite café we drove to Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary. The family experienced close encounters with both echidnas and a baby wombat before hand feeding kangaroos and viewing the other wildlife exhibits. It was then back to Hobart, and their accommodation, after a day including a platypus sighting that will be a life-long memory.

Our second day together and our first stop was the historic township of Richmond, to view the 1823 built bridge, and to get our daily coffee fix at the local bakery. We then headed for the east coast with our next stop being Kate’s Berry Farm. The family stocked up on chocolate and picked a few strawberries under a sunny sky. We then stopped for lunch at the Freycinet Marine Farm before visiting Cape Tourville, in the Freycinet National Park, for some great views.

Our next stop was Friendly Beaches where the family were truly amazed at the long stretch of beautiful, white, sandy beach. A quick paddle in the clear, but chilly, water and it was time for their last attraction for the day, Devil’sCorner Cellar Door. While the parents enjoyed a tasting paddle, with cheese, the children ate pizza! It was time for the trip back to Hobart to complete two day sexploring a little of what Tasmania has to offer.

That platypus sighting will surely be a very special memory of their trip to Tassie, forever!
